Crofters Cottage is a charming little stone building that compliments the strong Celtic influence that has given shape to Glen Innes, about two hours west of Grafton on the New England Highway. The carpark for Crofters Cottage is situated just a ‘stone’s throw’ from the Australian Standing Stones attraction in Glen Innes’ Centennial Parklands. The Standing Stones, inspired by the Ring of Brogdar in Scotland’s Orkeys, pay homage to the town’s Celtic heritage.

Crofters Cottage overlooks the Standing Stones, offering diners wonderful views from the windows of the Celtic-style cafe. The Cottage came under new management in 2013 when it was reopened after a short closure. While the interiors were given a lick of fresh paint to give a more airy, modern feel, the cottage’s quaint Celtic character remains.

Outdoor and indoor dining is available. Open Monday-Saturday (9.30am-4.30pm)

A light lunch at Crofters Cottage

We stopped by Crofters Cottage for lunch after arriving in town for the day. The Cottage had been reopened the day earlier under new managers after a closure of about three months. It is now being managed by ex-Brisbane businesswoman Mel, who also runs local homewares, fashion and beauty shop The Bee’s Knees, also in Glen Innes.

The Cottage was the perfect blend of Celtic heritage and modern decor. The staff, including Mel (who was working in the kitchen) were extremely friendly and accommodating. We both ordered the Deepwater sandwich, named after the Deepwater National Park just outside of Glen Innes, along with a latte and a berry smoothie with yoghurt. The drinks came out quickly, as did the sandwiches. The smoothie was delicious with a strong flavour of fresh berries, particularly strawberries. The sandwiches were fresh and tasty, with a good quantity of salmon layered on toasted multigrain bread lathered with cream cheese and dressed with fresh butter lettuce. I was tempted to order one of Mel’s special recipe caramel tarts after hearing the lady at the table talking them up, but, alas, was too full.

We took a short walk to the lookout over the town after lunch on the other side of the Standing Stones. Overall it was a really great way to spend a couple of hours.
